Ariano Muscat Ottonel 2010

Lemon green colour with a floral intense aroma. Low acidity, dry, soft touch, light, easy to drink, not many wineries have the variety, only 5 ha planted. The family originally coming from Piemont, Italy.

Drink now – 2012

Marichal Sauvignon Blanc 2010 (tank sample)

There was rain beginning of February, it made the harvest difficult. But the weather changed luckily by the end of the month. Slightly cloudy appearance and gooseberry nettle on the nose. Lime zest with medium body and fairly fresh acidity.

Drink 2012-2015

Marichal Pinot Noir and Chardonnay 2008

The proportion 65- 35% fermented in oak. Salmon colour, 70% new oak and 3 months. Some cherry and oat meal on the nose, certainly a curiosity, bit meaty. Dry, high alcohol on the palate (at least the feeling, 13,5%ABV), creamy and full bodied, some smoke yet gentle finish.

Drink 2011-2018

Marichal Pinot Noir and Tannat 2008

One of my least favourite blends, at least in theory. Juan likes to show me this wine, because he believes in it, quite right. Medium ruby colour, closed nose, soft expression of marmalade juicy fruit on the palate. Round and elegant.

Drink now

Marichal Pinot Noir 2007

Medium ruby colour, cherry, blueberry touch of smoke on the nose. Good expression. Fresh acidity, medium texture, cherry and smoky notes greeting back on the palate, ripe and spice. Fresh fruity finish, very nice.

Drink now- 2015

Marichal Tannat 2005 Grand Reserve

18 months oak, no filtration, no fining. Best parcel selection and comparing the grapes selecting the best of the best.

Good colour, smoky, beefy fairly rich dense black fruit. Good acidity, soft tannins, elegant and full bodied and some spicy meat ball note on the finish. Good concentration and long finish, yet it drinks well.

Drink now – 2018

Bouza Winery

Tempranillo B15 2008

Parcela Unica

Single parcel vinification, 2320 bottle, one parcel. Good colour, bright chunky cherry nose, touch of smoky raspberry note. Great concentration, plenty of red fruit and fresh acidity, delicate combination. Peppermint, plum, black olive and some toffee vanilla. 13,5 ABV%

Drink 2012-2017

Bouza Tannat A6 2008

Deep colour, fully on the nose very rich. There is some perfume, seductive floralness and rich black fruit. Hint of smokiness and some beefiness on the palate. But full bodied and rich fruit combination, mulberry, menthol and liquorice, very ripe. Exciting wine, with potential.

Drink 2012-2020

Bouza, Monte Vide Eu 2007

Blend of Tannat 50%, Merlot 30%, Tempranillo 20%. Coming from the Portuguese “I saw a hill”, 6 hills from East-West. The crop harvested in Las Violetas and Melilla.

Deep colour, rich and dense notes. Full black fruit and spice. Complex right from the start yet not overpowering, chunky, bold fruit, vibrant mid palate and soft fruit. Sweet drive and elegant finish. Very good work by Dr. Eduardo Boido, the wine maker. (Retail price: 33 GBP).

The three varieties have been hand harvested, selected and vinified separately. Fermentation happened at 26°C with 2 pumping over /day and with post maceration and once punching down. Almost 20 days of total maceration, the MLF happened in barrels a mix of French and American oak, for 15 months.

Drink 2012-2018

Marichal Chardonnay Premium varietal 2008
Premium varietal means 1 variety only in small volume, no oak, expressing the terroir.
Pale colour, clean citrus and grapefruit in the nose. Good acidity, crisp, no wood. Medium intensity, easy to drink with a blossom and floral finish.

Marichal Sauvignon Blanc 2008
Pale colour, fresh mint, floral crisp with a good intensity. Dry, good zippy, easy citrus, fresh floral. Nice round finish with a hint of citrus/lime juice.

Chardonnay Reserve Collection 2006
60% fermented in oak, 6 months in oak, a mix of barrels. Straw yellow colour, whiff of oak, wood and toast notes, coconut, vanilla, medium acidity, soft finish. Round creamy notes at the end.

Blanc de Noir Reserve Collection 2007
65% Pinot Noir 35% Chardonnay.
Pinkish colour, wood with strawberry toast on the nose. Sort raspberry, jam/toast, crisp. Ripe, lovely breakfast start. Its really like a jam breakfast toast mixture.
Dry, good weight, wine with strength fairly high alcohol, toasty biscuit. Juice vs. skin, 10% moved out of juice, Pinot Noir.

Marichal Tannat Premium Varietal 2007
Under went a cold maceration on 5-7°C for 3-4 days to soften the Tannat. Good ruby colour, cool mint nose great mix of blackberry and red berry fruit, elegant nose.
Complex ripe, herbs, basil and cassis on the palate, delicate yet gorgeous, medium body, soft tannins indeed very gentle and pure fruit character, raspberry, cranberry with a mint touch with a herbal effect, smooth.

Reserva Collection 2005
70% Pinot Noir, 30% Tannat (2 different harvests)
Garnet colour with a purple hint, fading. Why Juan blended the “princess” Pinot which is an own entertainer with the robust and deep Tannat? A German importer liked it and buys it ever since. Fair enough.
Red fruit with a mint, touch of liquorice, yet there is something what disturbs the freshness of the wine, Pinot goes down despite being 70% in the blend. Tannat rules, here.

Note: The following two wines I was tasting by myself in Montevideo (hence the 2 different dates).

Marichal Reserve Collection Pinot Noir 2006
Pale ruby colour, soft velvety nose with red fruit character. Good acidity, soft smooth, fairly rich, with elegant skills, red fruit, cranberry, raspberry hint of plum and a smoky spice, tick of vanillia on the finish, very delicate, oak is present.

10/04/09
Marichal Tannat 2005 Reserve Collection
Good deep colour, complex spice notes, caraway, cinnamon, pepper with a mix of herbs in combination of black fruit, blackberry and plum whiff of coffee yet very ripe fruit on the nose. Deep indeed. Fine acidity, ripe yet soft tannins, balanced picture, rather complex again on the palate, good mouth feel with grip and density tick of spice on the finish line, well done, fabulous Tannat!

    Kristian:
You were fortunate to meet one of the most talented winemakers of Uruguay, young and daring, yet focused and methodical. The wines of Marichal Wines are simply the result of the constant labor that Juan Andrés and Alejandro inherited from their family roots, where tradition plays an important role; at the same time, this young generation of winemakers, agronomists, oenologists, have found their way to enhance the personality of their wines through the incorporation of modern techniques and above all, after tasting many wines worldwide to establish a solid pattern of quality and pushing their standard up to obtain premium wines. Our favorites are Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Best of all, there are many good restaurants where you can find them in the UK. Cheers!
