Straw yellow colour, with a ripe stone fruit hints on minerality, good texture on the palate has a fair density and good structure, long finish and plenty of citrus fruit with a crisp acidity, all the way to the finish. Drink 2012-2022

Ripe stone fruit on the nose, fairly rich. Fresh acidity, lovely texture, full on with good fruit combination, medium alcohol but a good finish, touch of spice too. Drink now-2016

Hattenheimer Wisselbrunnen Riesling Erstes Gewächs 2008
Ripe tropical fruit, hint of lime lemon and some pear, mango. Whiff of leesy character on the nose, perhaps sign of battonage (?). One 225 first use of barrique barrel was used the rest 3rd use, good finish. The acidity in 2008 was bit higher then in 2007 in most of the wines, lovely freshness it counterbalances the touch of sweetness very well. An Erstes Gewächs is always dry, but can have however up to 12 g/l RS if the acidity is close to 10 g/l.

Hattenheimer Wisselbrunnen Riesling TBA 2007
Golden colour, fantastic ripe full botrytis notes on the nose. Complex, jam, marmalade, tropical fruit, rich, rich (passion, lychee, dragon fruit, etc.). Great sweetness, backed up by superb acidity, vibrant with a fantastic acidity. Complex wine with great long finish. Drink now-2040 (its drinks very well at the moment too)

Assmannshäuser Höllenberg Spätburgunder aus dem Cabinetkeller 2007
Pale ruby colour, lovely beetroot, red fruit on the nose, plum, raspberry soft spice. Good acidity, ripe red fruit on the palate with a distinctive Pinot character, quite high in alcohol young but very good potential, promising. Assmannshausen stands out with his Pinot in the Rheingau, one factor for great quality Pinot is the difference between day and evening/night temperatures. The forest on the top of the hill side plays a major role in the temperature variation.

Ripe on the nose with a tick spice, dry soft fruit, lemon and lime touch of rose petals and a light fruity finish. Drink now-2018

Hochheim Domdechaney Riesling Erstes Gewächs 2008
Soft on the nose, fairly pronoucned however. Notes of pear, mango, apricot with, dry, crisp yet soft structure, bit more fruity but good acidity backs it up.

Assmannshausen Höllenberg Spätburgunder 1938
The alcohol was back then not indicated on the label, could have been around 14% ABV, 106° Oe, still going strong, fantastic wine, especially when you consider the age to it. Tawny colour, certainly mature, bright nose, full of coffee, toffee, touch of tobacco but there is still some good red fruit to discover. Fresh acidity, rich toffee, caramel and Pinot fruit on the palate, it has a soft nice touch, probably gone through MLF back then, drinks very well.
Well probably drink now (if you get a chance to own it…)

Johannishof Charta Riesling 2008
Charta was the predecessor of the Erstes Gewächs wines, the major difference that here is no mentioning of a single vineyard. Stone fruit, quite a ripe nose from the beginning, melon, grapefruit, peach touch of spice on the finish. 10 g/l RS, but feels fairly dry, medium finish.

Coming from red slate, quarzit, cool peach, grapefruit nose with some slaty mineral character. Steely but ripe at the same time. Full on the palate, yet a lovely perfume and elegance coming through the wine, dense citrus, lemon finish. Drink now-2025

Johannisberg Hölle Riesling Erstes Gewächs 2008
This bit is mainly quarzit and compared to the previous, above one it has a fruitier less steelier picture. More of a fruit drop, pear, mango, ripe apple whiff of minerality. Dry with round fruit notes on the palate, good acidity, vibration on the finish. Drink now-2025

Geisenheimer Kläuserweg Riesling Spätlese 1971
Golden colour, pronounced wild yet soft ripe fruit. There is a definitive note of flintiness, mineral character, funky, sparkle. Good concentration on the palate, 36 g/l RS, fruity yet steely with a great nerve and age to it, some minty notes with a hint of leafy note in combination with stone fruit.

Pale strawyellow colour, ripe stone fruit aromas with a round citrus lemon fruit combination. Dry with a fresh acidity, citrus and lemon fruit with a touch of pear and mango on the finish. Elegant perfume all the way.

Spicy fruity on the nose, with a fresh vibrant acidity on the palate, medium sweet, yet a great nerve to it, fab.acidity.

10,5% ABV, 30 g/l RS, 9 g/l TA, 90 °Oe. Golden colour, some botrytis notes combined with petrol and marmalade and mineral spicy note. Fantastic ripe, tropical notes on the finish line and mid palate, complex, intense and great fun.

Hochheim Reichestal Spätburgunder trocken Erstes Gewächs 2007
Picking happened earlier and as Gregor was explaining more fruit notes can be gathered with a fresher acidity and most of the times chaptalization happens. Interesting contrast the wine below (1999 vintage is Auslese, no chaptalization is allowed there) is quite different in style as well.
Light ruby colour, bright red fruit on the nose raspberry, bramble, touch minerality, good acidity, full bodied, 15 %ABV, 105 ° Oe, yet elegant finish with notes of tobacco and red fruit.

Hochheimer Reichestal Spätburgunder Auslese trocken 1999
Light ruby colour with a light fading brown rim. Notes of oak on the nose, ripe fruit, yet a lot of leafy, cedar, forest floor note is coming through, developed. Dry, yet quite rich on the palate 110 °Oe, very ripe on the finish, drinks well right now.

Full on the nose, grapefruit, lemon base with very stone fruit notes in the foreground. Pear, apricot, ripe perfume with a full on spicy minerality, dry on the palate great vibration and ripe fruit.

Ripe fruit notes, less spice then the one above, more citrus and lemon notes with a touch of ripe apple. Dry, crisp, stone fruit notes, pear, mango, straight with a full finish.

The winery decided not to produce any EG in 2008 (just Charta wine which is clearly more fruity, soft fruit and touch of flint). Deeper straw yellow, cool menthol, stone fruit notes, spicy minerality soft eucalyptus note and good acidity on the palate. Complex notes just started to develop more and more…

Straw yellow colour, ripe stone fruit aromas, pear, mango touch of almond. Dry, round great acidity, some spicy mineral notes combined with a gun flinty character, good supplement. Very long finish. The retail price from the cellar would be around 20 €.

Golden colour, with a light oxidative character on the nose, bottling took place in 1991, vinified in Fuder traditional casks 1200 L. 70 g/l RS, 13 g/l TA, fruity with a slight astringent touch, notes of yeast and, nutty almond character on the palate. Evidence of oxidative handling yet a compact and vivid wine.

Fresh and full nose, pear, pineapple, touch of dense but ripe apple with citrus and lemon base. Dry, whiff of peppery spiciness on the palate, crisp acidity, tropical notes perhaps a touch of good botrytis, round and good finish.

Golden colour, rich honey, tropical notes lead by botrytis but there is some petrol in the background evolving too. Rich fruit on the palate, high drive of sweetness, good concentration, passion fruit, pineapple, mango, rich and full on finish with good acidity to back up the “rich story” in the wine.

Golden colour, citrus and lime fruit rich nose, fairly intense. Sweet with a great structure on the palate, hint of mango lavender and very ripe lemon note, clean, straight and very vibrant on the finish line. As much as full bodied an ice wine can be, this is one.

Deep golden colour, rich nose full of botrytis, complex menthol minerality and marzipan, with a rich layer of tropical fruit maracuja, mango, pineapple, very ripe nose. On the palate good sweetness with some dried fruit sensation, round and good finish, medium concentration on the end. 160 g/l RS.

Peach, apricot pear drops on the nose, full on and very pronounced, elegant perfume floralness on hot pursuit. Great acidity, lovely vibration and good dense, ripe fruit from mid palate to the end.

Golden colour, fig, prune, signs of clear oxidative character, some ginger and spice on the nose. Complex notes on the palate, sweet and dry at the same time, confusing but rather exciting. 30 g/l RS, 10 % ABV. Ripe orange peel, fig and nutty finish, still holding strong.

Deep golden colour with an orange rim. Soft and cool, menthol, eukyalptnus notes, some sweet botanical almost medicinal character on the nose. Great sweetness 150 g/l RS, good density, but not cloying, fresh acidity great support for the wine. Fresh and lovely finish, with great balance and intensity.

Ripe fruit on the nose, full on, like a fruit salad of ripe apple, pear, mango elegant perfume all the way along. Dry, but there is a note of tropical fruit as well on the palate, very good supportive acidity especially on the mid palate. Great concentration, fabulouse EG.

More then amber on the colour moving into brownish, plenty of caramel notes of tobacco and smoke on the nose. Still great sweetness on the palate and no signs of tiredness, complex notes of fruit and smoky, caramel dried fruit. Good acidity, and finish. 175 g/l RS
