Bordeaux en primeur 2009
I had the pleasure to taste some of the 2009 vintages before the official future, en primeur campaign got on its way. A quick note on some of the tasted 09’ with the MW students (more notes from 09’ will follow).
15-16, 17/03/2010
Cos d´Estournel, Saint Estéphe
Goulée 2009
Generic Medoc, not vinified at the Chateau, old vines Cabernet Sauvignon, deep colour, slightly closed nose on the start, ripe fruit on the palate, full impact on the palate, late picking, warmer maceration temperature, bold and round but fairly big grip on the palate, high alcohol, juicy, ripe, very promising.

Pagodes de Cos 2009
It was the perfect vintage as Jean Guillaume Prats was saying, this one heavy on Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), everything is high and also in balance, polyphenols, acidity, alcohol. Pretty floral notes on the nose, very elegant and refined soft red and black fruit combination, showing finesse, elegance yet full bodied.
Drink 2017-2035
Cos d´Estournel 2009
The first wine of the winery, again heavy on Cabernet Sauvignon (80%), deep colour, rich on the nose, ripe, pure but plenty of weight. Very polished and modern picture. Rich dense on the palate, high alcohol, high tannins, and crisp at the same time, as Jean-Guillaume was saying everything is high in this wine, great note, fantastic finish.
Drink 2020-2060
Chateau Lagrange, Saint Julien
Chateau Lagrange 2009
75% Cabernet Sauvignon 25% Merlot, since November in barrel, 42 hl/ha, late picking, the alcohol level of the Merlot was high, Merlot got picked from the 28th September, over 7 days, and Cabernet Sauvignon from 8th October finished on the 17th October, 3,6 pH 13,6 % ABV. Purple, youngish colour, floral, red fruit nose, bit aggressive it seems at least, touch of spice from the oak, is there some SO2 as well (?), good balance on the palate, full flavours, compact and robust wine…very promising.
Drink 2020-2050
Chateau Las Combes, Margaux
Las Combes 2009
48-48 % Merlot and CS, 4% PV
High alcohol and acidity, quite ripe and vibrant on the palate, perfume with rich black fruit from the start, full bodied, some herbs and ripe fruit. Great potential, future will tell, but full bodied, rich polished, modern.
Drink 2020-2050
Chateau Lynch Bages, Pauillac
Lynch Bages 2009
Impressive nose, cherry, plum, full of blackfruit. But there is a also a floral, seductive sensation to it too. Full bodied, high acidity, and powerful tannins, dense rich with a full flavour profile, no doubt it will become a complex wine. Very promising.
Drink 2020-2055

Chateau Batailley 2009
Vivid colour, cherry and plum, not too heavy on the nose, rather seductive and elegant with some charm. Dry, great acidity, soft and silky tannins yet full bodied, 74% CS, 24% Merlot, 2 CabFranc. Touch of herbals, spice on the palate, yet juicy fruit, power and elegance combined, cool dark chocolate finish.
